Matchday 1 has been anything but quiet. Germany hammered Curaçao 7-1, Sweden put five past Tunisia and the USA scored four — yet two of the favourites, Brazil and Spain, both finished without a win.

The goals kept coming

Germany delivered the round's statement: a 7-1 rout of Curaçao, the smallest nation ever to reach a World Cup. Sweden were almost as ruthless in a 5-1 win over Tunisia, and the United States swept past Paraguay 4-1. Three seeded sides, three openers that turned into goal fests.

Where the favourites dropped points

The loudest talking point came from contenders who couldn't win. Spain were held to a goalless draw by debutants Cape Verde — ninety minutes without a breakthrough against a side at its first finals. Brazil could only draw 1-1 with Morocco, the Netherlands traded blows with Japan in a 2-2, and Qatar, Switzerland, Canada and Bosnia all shared the points as well.

Job done, the harder way

Not everyone needed a hatful. Hosts Mexico opened the tournament with a measured 2-0 over South Africa at the Azteca, Australia saw off Türkiye by the same score, and South Korea edged Czechia 2-1. Scotland and Ivory Coast both won 1-0 — against Haiti and Ecuador — grinding the points out rather than running away with them.
