What it is good for
Some pairings have a stable character: derbies that always run hot, a tactical matchup one side never solves. H2H shows whether the pair has a pattern — say, five straight meetings with over 2.5 goals.
Where it misleads
Squads, coaches and even league tiers change. A meeting from three seasons ago involved largely different players; giving it the same weight as last month's form is the classic H2H mistake. Recent meetings matter, ancient ones are trivia.
