Post-match press conferenceAustria

Austria defeated Jordan in their World Cup 2026 opener, but coach Ralf Rangnick was candid: Jordan were an uncomfortable opponent who played brave long balls and diagonal passes that caused problems throughout. Austria only established real control after the 60th minute, with substitutes Paul Wanner and Karnukemeka drawing praise for their quality and composure on a big stage.

The main injury concern is Stefan Porschmer, who suffered a jaw collision late in the game — an X-ray tomorrow will determine whether he can continue in the tournament. Rangnick confirmed what his players have been saying in training: the official match ball flies like a cannonball, which he tied directly to Romano Schmidt's opener and the wave of long-range goals seen across the tournament.

On Messi's hat-trick and record: Rangnick called him a phenomenon rather than a legend — «legends don't usually still play.» Looking ahead to Argentina, he warned that the bench Messi's side brought on today was stacked with top-level talent, and the squad is far more than one man. He framed the Jordan win as a vital but hard-earned step, adding that with 48 teams in the field, easy games are largely a thing of the past.

Post-match press conferenceJordan

Jordan's head coach defended his players after the defeat to Austria, arguing the scoreline did not reflect the quality of the performance. The first half was complicated by Laimer and Schmid operating in deep positions behind Austria's striker, causing defensive disorganization on Jordan's side.

Halftime adjustments helped Jordan equalize and dominate the midfield battle through much of the second half. Austria ultimately decided the match through set pieces — a corner and a penalty — with their physical height advantage proving decisive in those moments.

The coach singled out the absence of Yazan Naimat as the key missing factor, saying the team would have looked different with him available. Several players entered the game short of match fitness: Alayan had been out for four months, while others were returning from injury.

Jordan have just one player competing in a top European league, yet were able to press Austria's build-up play and force Aba and Friedl into long balls. The coach accepted full responsibility for any criticism, shielding his players entirely and framing the game as a learning reference point for Jordanian football's development.
