Tori Penso, 39, has been appointed to referee Ecuador-Germany on June 25 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford. The American official becomes only the second woman to lead a men's World Cup match, following Stéphanie Frappart.
Katja García, 33, will officiate Tunisia-Netherlands on June 26 at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, making her the third woman referee in men's World Cup history. García previously served as fourth official in Netherlands-Japan (2-2), England-Croatia (4-2), and USA-Australia (2-0).
Penso has already refereed Czech Republic-South Africa (1-1) in Round 2, marking continued progress in gender diversity at the tournament across all officiating levels.
